The corrupt file was lpremove.exe as far as I could tell because I had never ran into a file such as that before (sorry for sounding so ignorant) I don't know I have tested IE9 and get the same results. It's about all I can suggest without a little more background (when did the problem start, did you install something, etc). I most often came up with the 99% CPU (iexplore.exe) when exiting gmail.

  • I guess there is more than one type of exploit that targets the explorer.exe process. Virus?
