The entire reason why firefox became so popular was because it worked, was fast, and didn't use the entire system's cpu and ram. Add on top of that firefox looking more and more like chrome... And yes.. Or did the problem start after something else updated, such as Windows, graphics card drivers, security suite?

As a diagnostic to see whether Flash might be the culprit, try setting the Shockwave Flash plugin to Click-to-Play ("Ask to Activate"). It was all normal until a year ago, or so. I don't know how that works in Windows 8.1. I've tried like hell to stick with firefox, but it's become useless.
